Mesothelioma mortality in New York and New Jersey
According to the most recent National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) report containing mesothelioma facts and statistics, there were approximately 2,700 cases of malignant mesothelioma diagnoses in 2004 caused by exposure to asbestos. New York ranked fourth in mesothelioma diagnoses nationwide with approximately 140 incidents. New Jersey ranked eighth, with approximately 110 cases of malignant mesothelioma diagnoses.
The top three states for mesothelioma deaths in 2004 were California with 248 deaths, Florida with 177 deaths and Pennsylvania with 193 deaths, according to the NCHS report.
Workplace asbestos exposure in New York
Lawyers and researchers alike attribute most of New York’s mesothelioma statistics to workplace asbestos exposure. According to the statistics gathered from dozens of mesothelioma lawsuits filed in New York, most asbestos exposure that lead to malignant mesothelioma occurred at the following job sites:
Shipyards
- Brooklyn Navy Yard;
- Staten Island Shipyards;
- Bethlehem Steel Shipyards;
- Todd Shipyards;
Power plants
- Con Edison:
- Astoria;
- Ravenswood;
- 14th Street;
- 34th Street;
- Indian Point;
- Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO):
- Port Jefferson;
- North Point.
Workplace asbestos exposure in New Jersey
According to New Jersey mesothelioma lawyers and researchers, the state’s high ranking in malignant mesothelioma mortality could be largely explained by the countless incidents of asbestos exposure at workplaces where asbestos-containing materials were used more extensively than anywhere else in the state:
Shipbuilding facilities
- Hoboken Shipyards;
- Kearney Federal Shipyard;
Oil refineries
Power plants
- Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG):
- Camden;
- Clifton;
- Edison;
- Elizabeth;
- Harrison;
- Irvington;
- Union;
- Warren.
Unfortunately, both in New York and New Jersey there have been numerous facilities where innocent mesothelioma victims were exposed to asbestos on a regular basis, including factories, commercial and office buildings, schools, hospitals, and condominiums.
ATTENTION:
Mesothelioma has no known cure and often causes severe pain, suffering, and other types of damage, such as loss of consortium, and loss of income. Additionally, due to the exceedingly high cost of mesothelioma treatments, many families exhaust savings and accumulate financial debt in order to pay for the medical expenses of their family member.
Under the law of most states, pain and suffering from mesothelioma may be compensated through the award of money damages, usually obtained with the help of experienced mesothelioma lawyers. In some states other types of damages may also be recovered.
Asbestos litigation affords mesothelioma victims the opportunity to receive financial compensation and hold accountable the companies that caused their asbestos exposure.
IMPORTANT:
If you or your family member has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should get in touch with a mesothelioma lawyer as early as possible to determine if you have a mesothelioma case and to:
- Preserve your rights to bring a legal action against the responsible parties within the limited time frame allowed by law, known as statute of limitations;
- Obtain maximum compensation in your case by being able to:
- Preserve evidence and establish facts of the asbestos exposure while the claimant is still alive and able to provide information;
- File and resolve a lawsuit against the responsible parties before they file for bankruptcy or, if they already have, to obtain compensation before their bankruptcy trust funds run out of money;
- Expedite your case, as courts tend to give higher priority to mesothelioma lawsuits where the claimant is still alive.
